To investigate the effect of local ulcer therapy with polyurethane foam (Rederg) on oxygen tension (TcPo2) on the ulcer base. Prospective, controlled, randomized study with leg ulcer therapy. University Department of Wound Healing and Burns, Copenhagen University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark. Forty-one patients with venous leg ulcers. Thirty-eight patients (23 women) with chronic leg ulcers and a mean age of 64.6 years were included in the study. In total, 96 measurements were performed. Ulcer treatment with foam, compressive bandaging, compression stockings, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in a subgroup. TcPo2 on the ulcer base was measured with a Clarke electrodes (ThermaCAM, Helsinki, Finland) and a transcutaneous temperature sensor (T-Scan 401, Sunlight Medical, Washington, USA) before and after each treatment. After the ulcer treatment TcPo2 was significantly (P50 mmHg was regarded as clinically significant. In the investigated ulcer treatment groups, the therapeutic effect was equal. TcPo2 was increased after every treatment, but the increment was not significantly different between the treatment groups.
